The Bible Societies in Ireland

Celebrating God's Word

Following many months of planning the actual handwriting of the Bible has begun!

Spring Fling, 7-9 April 2006, organised by the Methodist Church in Dun Laoghaire included the Handwritten Bible Project in the weekend events. Almost 90 people participated, copying the first passages from 1 Samuel, Proverbs and Paul's Letter to the Romans.

Matha, the Gospel of Matthew in Irish was begun and Psalm 23 was written in Portuguese.

The Leaders of the four main denominations gathered in Armagh in May to write the beginning of Genesis. Archbishop Robin Eames [Church of Ireland], Archbishop Sean Brady [Catholic Church in Ireland], Dr Harry Uprichard [Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland] and the Rev Des Bain [President of the Methodist Church in Ireland] also wrote the first verses of each of the four Gospels. They were joined by David Taylor [Chair of the Bible Society in Northern Ireland], Rev Dr Kieran O'Mahony OSA [Chair of the National Bible Society of Ireland] and John Doherty and Judith Wilkinson [General Secretaries of the two Bible Societies].

Many more groups have participated and have returned their completed pages.
